Smart Machine – Smart Factory – Smart Company A bottom-up approach to digital production

The talk is mainly dealing with the current research at the Institute of Production Engineering at Graz University of Technology. Based on the worldwide unique “Research Grinding Machine” at the Institute characteristics of “Smart Machines” are pointed out. Machines, robots and products with cognitive capabilities are players in an orchestra of “Cyber Physical Systems”.
The concert hall is metaphorically speaking the “Smart Factory” acting as a node within the “Smart Company” representing a complex international production network.

Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Franz Haas
After studying Mechanical Engineering and Economic Sciences, Franz Haas was an assistance professor at the Institute of Production Engineering at Graz University of Technology and received his doctoral degree in 1996. Afterwards he worked as managing director of his own toolmaking company in Stainz, Styria.
He continued his scientific career in 2007 as department manager for mechanical engineering and professor at UAS Campus 02 in Graz. With October 2013, he became head of the Institute of Production Engineering at Graz University of Technology. Since 2016, he has also the function of a deputy head of the Field of Expertise “Mobility & Production”.
